Coimbatore district was the part of the Kongu country belonging to Sangam age. The area was mainly inhabited by the tribes and the Kosars had their headquarters at Kosampathur which eventually became Coimbatore. But the rule of the tribes came to an end when the Rashtra Kutas overpowered them. The reign of power then went into the hands of the Cholas then the Chalukayas became the administrators of the Kongun territory. The Pandayas then took over the territory and finally the Cysalas.
