History of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore district was the part of the Kongu country belonging to Sangam age. The area was mainly inhabited by the tribes and the Kosars had their headquarters at Kosampathur which eventually became Coimbatore.

But the rule of the tribes came to an end when the Rashtra Kutas overpowered them. The reign of power then went into the hands of the Cholas then the Chalukayas became the administrators of the Kongun territory. The Pandayas then took over the territory and finally the Cysalas.

The Pandayas Kindom went through lot of internal turmoil which resulted in the inference of the Muslim rulers sitting in Delhi. And soon the area was under the dominance of Madurai Sultanate from whom the Vijayanagar rulers had to battle hard during 1377-78 after defeating the Madurai  Nayaks. The reign of Muthu Veerappa Nayak and Tirumal Nayak had to go through internal resistance which led to the complete destruction of the Kingdom.
